Thanks to all who volunteered, donated, and attended the Do the Dean 2 Benefit on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at The Celtic Junction.

We had a wonderful day, the bands and artists were brilliant. Those who came gave generously and gave tremendous support and love. We had a great time.

The volunteers did a great job and once again Heather Jansz outdid herself with her magnificent cuisine.

Of course Cormac, Natalie, and everyone at the Junction were huge help and support as well.

Thanks to all involved in a grand night of enchantment at Zumbrota’s State Theatre, organized by Crossings Art Center in Zumbrota on Wednesday, November 25, 2009.

The event featured:

Ann Reed, Cam Waters, Claudia Schmidt, Dan Chouinard, Dan Newton, Leslie Ball, Marc Anderson, Peter Mayer, Prudence Johnson, and Vicky Emerson

Dean Magraw’s career spans over thirty years: he’s a guitarist, composer, arranger, and producer. He’s an artist uniquely consistent in his ability to rise to the highest level of musical expression in a dazzling array of contexts.

On May 5, Dean was diagnosed with MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome). This basically means that Dean’s bone marrow isn’t functioning properly. In Dean’s case, leukemic blasts (immature cells) are crowding out other cells, especially the white blood cells. Chemotherapy began the following Monday.

When Dean’s concert with Vicky Emerson, scheduled at Crossings on August 28, was cancelled due to his condition, Marie Marvin got to work – with exquisite results.

Ten musicians, co-performers and friends of Dean, donated their talents and assembled at Zumbrota’s State Theatre for an evening of song to raise funds for Dean’s medical expenses in a life-affirming evening of joy in honor of Dean Magraw.

Boiled in Lead and Ruth MacKenzie thrilled the audience in a benefit for their ailing comrade, Dean Magraw, on Saturday, November 21, 2009

A very successful silent auction was held as well. Thanks to all of you who donated items, as well as your time and energy, and for attending this show!

About the Show:

Fresh from standing ovations in both the Chapel and the Concert Hall at Carleton College, this “…legendary figure in the field of American folk rock…” (World Music Central) comes back to The Cedar to help heal guitarist Dean Magraw.

Dean’s joining Boiled In Lead in 2005 was a pivotal factor in the band’s resurgence that led to their acclaimed 25th Anniversary release Silver.

(Silver) “…smashes genres, hits the most primal nerves, and – even in its acoustic moments – shakes your bones.” – Mpls-St.Paul magazine

Earlier this year, Dean Magraw was diagnosed with an illness that required a bone marrow transplant. He’s had to cancel all performances while he recovers, so the net proceeds from tonight’s concert will go towards his recovery. There will also be a silent auction, with items including signed prints from Sidney Maurer, Gregory W. Bitz, Sherlyn Barnes and Erin Sayer.

Ruth Mackenzie, a frequent collaborator with Dean, will join the quartet for a few songs to add her vocal lilt to the evening.

“Boiled in Lead’s return is to be greeted with huge applause, mass cheering and flag-waving in berserk fashion.” – fRoots (UK)

“Boiled in Lead keys into the most powerful elements of all the genres the band pulls from, finding a hypnotic common denominator in ancient Irish drones and rock rhythms, a similar energy source behind electric guitar solos and the shrill piping of penny whistles.” — Express Milwaukee

“…this is traditional music brought to the boil. Silvermay not be for the purists but it’s one of the best things you’ll hear this year. Trust me on this.” — Dai Jeffries, Rock’n’Reel (UK)

“…the most important folk-rock band to appear since the 1970s… required listening…” — MusicHound Folk: The Essential Album Guide

“…the prime purveyor of a style of Celtic music infused with punk-rock attitude, developing over the years with a hard-driving swirl that combined Irish folk with heavy rock and elements of styles from all over the world. …one of the best bands Minnesota’s ever produced. (When they play) all-acoustic, …don’t be fooled into thinking that means ‘quiet’ — even without amplification, Boiled In Lead can summon up furious punk-folk energy.” — The Onion (2004)

A rousing cheer went up when the news that Dean had returned home from the hospital was reported.

Here’s a wee low quality video of one of the high points of the evening:
