Hello friends and family-
As you know, Dean had his 1 year-post-transplant anniversary appointments during these past two weeks.
We got to hear all of the results a few days ago, and they are all good.
(all good!!!)
That seems like such an understatement. It is incredibly welcome news, and there is really no way to give it enough poetry or exclamation points… so I’ll just stick to the facts…
Basically, on a molecular level, Dean is doing beautifully, one year out.
He is 100% donor, there is no molecular evidence of MDS, all of his various blood counts are either in the normal range or climbing steadily towards normal… such beautiful results.
It was kind of a funny appointment last week- we got to hear all of this wonderful news, ask questions, tell a few jokes… and then were informed that Dean would be getting the first round of his vaccinations today (it’s like having your childhood vaccinations all over again), it would be “six or seven shots… and you might feel pretty bad for a few days afterwards.”
Ack!
So, we didn’t have a lot of time to celebrate before another procedure was underway.
(Apparently the nurses stood on either side of him, and gave him simultaneous shots in each arm. Ouch.)
And so it continues, this healing odyssey.
There is a long stretch to go- fatigue and nausea are things that come and go.
Dean is weaning himself off the last of his medications- not an easy task.
Integrating all of this past 16 months into who he is now, as a musician and as a person- something that will take years, I think.
He is playing all the time at home, and taking gentle but definite steps back into working/recording/performing.
On the exact date of his one-year anniversary, Dean played his first public performance in over a year. That was an incredible way to truly celebrate.
As always, I close by saying “thank you.” There are never enough ways to say these words… you have all helped to carry us through this year, and you continue to help. Thank you.
So much love,
Megan
Ps- I will send out another email soon with information about the bone marrow donor registry and cord blood registry… in case you’d like to get on those lists.

We wish you continued strength and well-being.
It’s a beautiful sunny fall day, a great day to celebrate your continued recovery. It was wonderful to chat with you the other day when we encountered you on your walk — it seemed so back-to-normal

aring chaps!
Dean, what amazing news! I’ve been checking in every once in a while and there’s just no way to adequately express how happy I am for you. And Megan, you deserve much credit, too, for supporting Dean through all this. Such strong people.
Dean-
It puts a smile on my face to hear that you are playing again. You’ve touched us all so many times. Always wishing you the best.

Love and best wishes to you from Norway – we are so very very happy to hear that you are stronger and stronger. Hope to see you on stage in December and the joy that is always with you! Take care.
Wow. What WONDERFUL news, to hear that you are enjoying better health, my dear, fantastic, not-so-very-long-ago-but-certainly-not-forgotten friend.
Life is good here in Canada, I hope someday you will pass by this way. I see Johnny is out gigging so perhaps I can see the two of you again sometime…but even if our paths don’t directly cross, you are in my heart, wonderful Dean.
My life is better for knowing you, and I am so happy that your body is allowing your light to shine.

Well now, I can be so preoccupied with my own little daily piles of crap that I forget, most of the time, 99.999% of the time, what’s really going on around all of us that’s actually way, way more important. Dean, hey Bro’, your story is so freakin’ amazing. I can’t even begin to imagine how you must feel, having gone through all of this, this mountain of intense difficulties, physical & psychological, emotional, every split second of every day of this long, long stretch of time… I’m so sorry I haven’t been MORE involved as a friend. Sure I went to some of the events, etc… I just want to hang out and play (*live) music with you again someday soon. Maybe we can jump start the trio with GK! Play the Cedar again. Huh? *Heard you in the headphones as I laid some Bass Lines recently* ;- Thrilled to hear you there, well anywhere … Anyway, enough obscure references, man. Come on up and out and if we can make it happen, let’s play again. I truly miss you a lot. GJ
