Hey Dean,
It’s raining all the time out here these days, so you’re not missing much on that front. Just had a surprise visit from a friend who had a bone marrow transplant many years ago. He’s still feeling great (but still can’t play much guitar)–that’s what we’re looking forward to from you for many years to come (only with smokin’ tunage). Sending love and music to you and yours…

Kathy Kreitzer August 20, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Dean,
I always enjoy your music and remember one fun party at Patricia and Luis’ with great stuffed grape leaves and lots of laughter.
Best, healthy wishes are sent your way.
Kathy

Hang in there, Dean, my non-hodgkins brother! Music isn’t the same without you.

Fred Willson August 21, 2009 at 9:04 am

Dean,
We’ve never met but I have been enjoying your music for years. You are one of a hand full of living guitarist that I truly admire. I was especially enthralled with your work with Peter Ostroushko some years ago. The life and color that you bring to the guitar has influenced my own playing. Thank you for your contribution and your inspiration.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you face the challenge of the next few months. We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you in concert again.

thanks,
Fred

Vicky Emerson August 21, 2009 at 9:42 am

Deano-

I’m thinking of you buddy. The Hey Hey Song just isn’t the same without your super power guitar playing.

Big love,
Vicky

John Metcalf August 21, 2009 at 11:12 am

It’s been 15 years since we played in the Dean Band at Ashokan. I still come back to “On a Misty Night/Mr. Knight”. The lessons and experience are with me always. Like abundant rain, they sink in slowly, though they came in powerful waves.

The strength and power that is in you can take you anywhere. Love from John and Sharon.

Dan Faricy August 21, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Dean,
You first taught me “eight days a week” on the guitar at the age of 10. I still sound lousy, but I can afford to play a nicer guitar at the age of 48. Those lessons were 2 dollars an hour.
When ever I hear that song I think of you. From a big fan in Boise!
Get well soon…Dan Faricy

Paula and Marty Reynolds August 21, 2009 at 1:10 pm

Hey Dean -
Wanted to send you a big hello and hug, and let you know you are kept present in our prayers and thoughts. It was a quick weekend when you were here with Vicky, but will always remain one of the…if not THE…most memorable and fun “after party” ever!! (not to mention the show itself…freakin’ awesome!) Our first house concert of the season is tomorrow night, and I am taking out one pair of the sacred tongs to place in view to honor you and keep you present in thought for us and those who were so fortunate to get to meet you and hear you play. You are definitely the best tong clacker I’ve ever met — oh, and you play a pretty mean guitar, too!
Much love, light, and energy ~
Paula and Marty

Love,
Chip

Prayers coming to you from Boston. I first ran into your music in the mid ’90s — saw you and Ostroushko in a duo in Faribault Jan 1995. I haven’t lived in MN since and so haven’t have much opportunity to follow up in that first entrancing experience, but was lucky to see Eight Head at the Cedar summer 1996, and Red Planet at the AQ Dec 07. Your albums, though, have always been part of the home soundtrack, and have added so much beauty and joy to my life. Thank you.

Gina Fisher August 25, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Dear Dean:

I was so sad to learn from Dec about what’s been going on with you. By coincidence, my sister is also battling cancer at this time. As you may recall, I’m a “survivor” too and feel strongly that yoga and meditation have been what healed me and kept me sane during the process.

It may sound trite but I sincerely mean it when I say if you need my assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to ask.

Wishing you peace, brother.
Gina

Karen August 26, 2009 at 8:29 pm

I was looking at the photo of you and Zach on the beach when you were in Marquette in October of ’04. Immediately I was inspired to head down to that spot to send you thoughts of strength and love from the beautiful shore of Lake Superior. love you, love you, love you,
Karen
p.s. Today the waves weren’t big and crazy like they were that day!

Andrea Magy Kibort August 27, 2009 at 12:24 am

Jean Passer Roemer August 27, 2009 at 7:18 am

Dean, I join the chorus of the many good wishes and prayers sent to you. My memories of you as a HP French student enjoying Mr. Thierrien’s quirks and as the one-of-a-kind dad in Don’t Drink the Water suggest to me that you are facing this with a great combination of guts and laughter. Please take care and know that many are wishing you well.

Linda Feldman August 27, 2009 at 9:25 am

Hey Deano…..yes, I forgive you for torturing me all through high school!
Hope all goes the best for you….I am sure it’s not the easiest of times but just keep listening to your favorite music and maybe that will help.

All the best…..Linda Feldman…..class of ’71…..the best class Highland ever produced!

Chris Smith August 28, 2009 at 10:16 am

Dean:

Very sorry to hear you’re having health issues. You were my guitar teacher and good friend at the old Guitar Workshop in Boston in the early ’80s, and Angie and I still think of you often. We’ll be sending along some monetary love as well, but thought you might like to see this tribute to one small portion of all you gave me, which I wrote back in 2006.

Be well, my great teacher. [Gassho]

My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Dean. May you have the best possible outcome, because we love your music and your insanity and want to enjoy it for many, many more years.

With love and warmest wishes, Joan

Corey Green August 28, 2009 at 1:12 pm

Mr. Magraw,
I am a student of Chris Smith’s. One lesson he has taught me that has meant more to me as musician than almost anything is how to communicate love through music, especially to an audience. I know that he attributes learning that art from you. I am here as a musician because of a lineage you carried on. Thank you so very much for all you have done. Please get well soon; I will be praying for you. —Corey

Helen Bommarito August 28, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Hey Deano,
Visualizing clear health for you, and a rapid recovery from the “inconvenience” of this procedure. With much love, Helen

Martha Forsyth August 28, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Hang in there! My best friend had a transplant (allogenic) in March in Boston – the transplant itself was surprisingly easy, but she had a bit of a bad time with Graft vs. Host. But they know what they’re doing these days – YOU CAN LICK THIS! Just be sure to really communicate with your team.

Tony Andrea August 28, 2009 at 3:09 pm

I speak for many, I think, when I say your music has always been a spiritual guide. We’re all looking forward to its continued inspiration in our lives! Rock on Dean!

mj kroll August 28, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Hi Dean,
It’s been too long since I’ve seen your smiling face and heard you speak Japanese. I do think of you often and I’m sorry to hear that you are fighting some pesky illness right now. Crank it to 11 and get well soon.
Love,
MJ ‘rockn’ Kroll

Marian August 28, 2009 at 6:06 pm

Looking forward to being among your beloveds on Sunday. Thinking of you and your humor and your music and loving you too. And even of my first in-depth conversation with you in about 1982 when you told me all about your love of Charlie Christian.

Dean,
It’s been a long time since high school, but I still remember our Humanities class! I hope you get well soon, and I hope to hear you sing next time I visit St. Paul. I’ll be sure to include you in my get well prayers.

Chris Thomson August 28, 2009 at 9:24 pm

Dean,
I am thinking about you and want you to know how much love and respect I have for you. I hope to connect with you soon.

Glen Helgeson August 28, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Dean, I sending you resounding vibes bro and on Sunday Axis Mundi will be pumping out that good healing energy for you.

Just to let you know, I have a close friend who had Lymphoma and later a bone marrow transplant. Today he is completely recovered. I can’t wait to hear you bending those notes again.

Jim Cousins August 28, 2009 at 11:09 pm

In 1993, I walked into The Cedar alone, a new venue to me, to check out some band I’d never heard of called 8-head. My appreciation of music was forever changed. Eleven years later you helped Angie and I throw caution to the wind with your music drifting from the garden at our wedding. No only your music, but you, Dean, are also a true inspiration. I can’t describe it with words, but there is greatness in you.
Peace. Love. And may all positive vibes resonate to you now!

Jim & Angie Cousins

Doug Duncan August 29, 2009 at 9:14 am

Dean,
I often think of an evening when you were appearing with Vicky Emerson at The Crossings. Marie asked me to go down to the green room to tell you it was show time. When I knocked on the door, you responded in Dean humor, “We’re not dressed”! I’ve always enjoyed your humor AND your guitar playing and am looking forward to more. All the best to you!

Don Rossoff August 29, 2009 at 8:50 pm

You are amazing!

Be strong and keep the faith – or whatever it is you get your kicks keeping! You’ll be in my prayers.

strouse August 30, 2009 at 5:15 am

No need to praise your sweetness, sincerity, and obscene humor, it all seems to be there above from the tons of people who are always getting to know and love you.

The last cure for sickness I remember you taking is chocolate milk and rum to get over a wisdom teeth extraction. I
know that the bone marrow transplant will work better than that.

Waiting to see you jumping around again (relatively) soon,

Dede

Tate Ferguson August 30, 2009 at 11:06 am

From the Viper Den at Paisano’s in 1974 all the way into the 21st century, Mr. Dean Magraw continues to influence me and every other player who ever worked with him. (Still got the red Gibson SG?) Keep on doing your unique and irreplaceable thing, my friend.

Wags August 31, 2009 at 12:23 am

Hey Dean,
I’m thinking about you my friend and about what an amazing person you are.Remember the time that we were hanging out at your pad and you made me laugh so hard that I had to go home?I love you bro.

Susan Cohen August 31, 2009 at 8:00 am

Hi Dean,
After so many years, I still have an indelible mental image of you from when we were housemates in Brookline, MA. You were the most exuberantly full of life and music person I had ever met. I still recall as if it was yesterday, how first thing in the morning you needed a blast of Charlie Parker to get your day going.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and many more years of life and music.
Susan
